5 Things You Need To Throw A Great Super Bowl Party… and where to get them

On Sunday February 1st America comes to a standstill. A whole nation, as well as many more millions around the globe, tune in to watch huge men wearing body armour and lycra pants run into each other with the impact of a minor road accident. Yes, it is the one and only Super Bowl.

This year the New England Patriot’s (AFC Champions) take on the Seattle Seahawks (NFC Champions) in Arizona and if you are having an American friend or two around you’ll want to make them feel like they’re at home. We think the following five items are the truly key ingredients to ensure your guests feel like this guy on their way home.

1. Crisps / “Chips” in American

Americans consume around 680m kilos (1.5 billion pounds) of potato chips each year, which equates to around 96 large (30g) bags per person per annum. Safe to say that they like their chips and on Superbowl Sunday they LOVE their chips. We had a look around and found some great value on crisps in Tesco this week. Not sure if they scheduled it for Superbowl Sunday, but if they did someone was on the ball! They have great value deals on brands like Tayto, Pringles and McCoys.

1. Beer

All that salt is going to dry you out, so to wash it down you’re going to need some beer. The decision is whether to go the big brand route or the craft option. Our suggestion here is 4 x 500ml bottles of Brú Rí carft beer for €10 in SuperValu. Got to add some Irish flavour to the American theme!

1. NFL Paraphernalia

This is a tricky one without going online, but there is the odd store that sells NFL jerseys and hats. Try CRU on Middle Abbey Street in Dublin and you can maybe get a tattoo of your favourite teams crest while you’re at it.

1. Chicken Wings, Ribs and Pizza

There will undoubtedly be a run on the pizza delivery companies on Sunday evening, but surprisingly we were unable to find any dedicated Super Bowl offers on the net. But we did note that Pizza Republic in Dublin are offering a great wings and pizza deal for only €19.95. If you haven’t tried their pizzas yet they’re well worth sampling! Any suggestions in other parts of the country?

1. Television:

Ok. Not too many people are going to run out and buy a new TV for the Super Bowl (at least not too many Irish people) but if you are looking for an excuse to buy a new television a Super Bowl party makes a great cover story for the better half.
